The Quinta da Pedra Escrita is one of several properties that Rui Roboredo Madeira inherited from his ancestors. A family that owns several thousand hectares of land on the Douro River and in the adjacent Beira Interior region. Rui Roboredo Madeira is a passionate winemaker, a wine nut who owns and manages several wineries but also advises and supports other winemakers. The ecological idea has played an important role for many years. Some of the wineries have been producing excellent organic wines for many years, including the Quinta da Pedra Escrita in the Douro Superior area with its granite and slate soils that can hardly be found elsewhere.

Rui Roboredo Madeira: Our commitment is to a better world for future generations on an ecological, social and economic level:
In 2007, I restored Quinta da Pedra Escrita, which has been in my mother's family for more than eight generations. Flat, very dry and arid soils are predominantly granite, very sandy and poor in nutrients and have no water retention capacity.
In past centuries, white port wines were grown on the winery's soils, which were highly valued for their aging capacity and freshness. The granite soils at high altitude are not very productive and produce wines with extremely complex aromas and acidity, which allow us to obtain wines with a long lifespan.
I want to bring this tradition back to a world of increasingly stereotypical wines and highlight the unique character of the high altitude wines from the Douro.
The production method is organic and the vines are not irrigated, like the almond grove. Both crops are interspersed with natural forests of centuries-old kermes oaks and junipers, thus promoting biodiversity with space for the development of local fauna and flora.
