Bodega Concejo

Bodega Concejo

There is evidence that wine was grown in what is now the vineyards of Bodega Concejo in Valoria. It was the so-called white monks or Premostratsians who brought viticulture to their monastery in Grijalba, which was dependent on Santa María de Retuerta.

In the 13th century a castle of the Order of Calatrava was founded, which today belongs to the Bodega Concejo, which houses the Concejo Hospedería wine tourism project.

In the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs toasted a local wine at their wedding and established rules for the production and transportation of wine in the area, the original copy of which is preserved in the family of today's winemakers.

After wine production came to a standstill here as well due to the phylloxera plague in the 19th century, the new planting of vines in the north of the Castilla y Leon region, only took place again around the 1906s and slowly continued into the 1900s 1950s down.

In the 1980s, Antonio Concejo looked to the future and restructured the 30 hectares of vineyards, creating the new winery. With foresight, he did not opt for mass production, but for the production of high-quality wines. To do this, he has selected 30 hectares of the best vineyards with good calcareous soils kept a few hectars of older vines. He is way ahead of his time and is already thinking about producing single-vineyard wines which would guarantee the quality and character of the wines. At the end of the 1990s, Enrique and Olga got involved in the project with little money but great enthusiasm. They gave up their jobs in Madrid to implement their ideas of producing good organic wines at fair prices in this region. The conversion to organic viticulture followed soon after.
