Château La Genéstière

Southern France's agriculture was not always dominated by winegrowing, fruit and vegetable plantations in the past, as can be seen from the history of Château La Genéstière. In the 16th century, 15,000 people in the Avignon region were employed in raising silkworms and weaving silk. France was the world's largest exporter of silk at the time.

Château La Genéstière
On the land of what would later become Château la Genéstière, Spanish broom (Ginesta) was grown instead of mulberry trees, hence the name Genéstière, which served as a habitat and food source for the silkworms. This industry came to a standstill as a result of several strikes by silk weavers and silk workers in 1831, 1834 and 1848, as well as the silkworm blotch that appeared in 1854.
If the so-called phylloxera epidemic had not simultaneously destroyed almost all of the European vines, the history of Château La Genéstière as a winery would have begun in the middle of the 19th century and not in 1930. In 1994, Jean-Claude and Raphaël Garcin bought the property, which already had a good reputation as a winery in France and abroad. Over the following years, through work, perseverance and know-how, the Domaines Saint-Anthelme, Les Ramières and Longval were added to Château La Genéstière, which now includes the prestigious appellations Tavel, Châteauneuf du Pape, Lirac and Côtes de du Rhône.
Château La Genéstière
In 2015, Château La Genéstière was acquired by Christian Latouche, who was already the owner of two organic wineries Les Baux de Provence. Château La Genéstière has been fully converted to certified organic viticulture in recent years and all organic wines are controlled and certified from the 2024 vintage.
If you happen to be near Avignon in July, I recommend you go to the Tavel village festival "Couleur Tavel" which is in all its splendour over a weekend (please ask for the date). Château La Genéstière and all the other wineries in the village will all be offering their wines for tasting.
