Beyra Rui Roboredo Madeira

Beyra Rui Roboredo Madeira

Rui Roboredo Madeira travelled the world in his younger years, getting to know many different ways of making wine and different ways of life. Only then did he return to the magnificent Douro Valley, convinced that he found the potential to produce the best wines in the world, respecting nature, cultivating the vineyards so that his organic wines would reflect his experiences, but also the scent and flavour of his land, its soils of slate, wet granite, rock roses, wild flowers and fruits.

Since the 19th century, his family has been linked to agriculture and viticulture in the border area between Alto Douro and Beira Alta, in one of the most remote areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Within the family, my passion for the flavors and aromas of this land was born and shaped my character. A legacy of respect for the traditional fauna and flora of the region, the environment and its people.
In Beira Interior, the wines are influenced by the altitude and the great temperature variations, in addition to the soils with high water retention capacity, which combine clay soils with slate, granite and granite with quartz. The vineyards are surrounded to the south by the Estrela and Malcata mountain ranges and to the east by Marofa, which are between 700 and 850 meters high.
The main advantage of viticulture at high altitude is the cooler climate, which allows higher total acidity levels in the wines, achieved thanks to the temperature variations between day and night. Cool nights result in a slower, more uniform ripening of the grapes, which improves the concentration of aromas and flavors. During the day, the greater radiation due to the proximity of the sun increases photosynthesis and gives more color with not very high alcohol content.
In Beira Interior, amidst the slate soils of the Douro water basin and the granite soils of the surrounding mountains, there are many quartz veins. Here we have better soil aeration, less nutrient retention, lower production and basically better sun exposure due to the reflection of sunlight by the quartz, which helps the ripening of the grapes.
This is a unique combination for the development of native grape varieties in old vines already perfectly adapted to the climate and soil, such as: Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Jaen (Mencia), Mourisco, Rufete and Touriga Nacional for red wines and Fonte Cal, Rabo de Ovelha, Síria and Gouveio (Godello) for white wines. This terroir produces fresh, lively wines with intense but also more delicate and balanced aromas.

Rui Roboredo Madeira: In 2011 I returned to the same winery where I harvested my first crop in 1986, in the village of Vermiosa, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. In the highest vineyards in Portugal, I grow grapes, vinify and age my Beira Interior wines. From the beginning, with the pioneering concept of "high altitude wines", they have become one of the references that have advanced this DOC region.
