Austria, Bioweingut Hofer

The Hofer organic winery cultivates 30 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Auersthal in the southern part of the Weinviertel, practically on the outskirts of Vienna. Here, the landscape begins to become more hilly, and viticulture is increasingly replacing other agricultural land. The winery is run by the Hofer family: Hermann Hofer, the winemaker; his wife Maria; and their one daughter and two sons. During the grape harvest, relatives and friends also lend a hand.

Bioweingut Hofer

The following grape varieties are cultivated:

53% Grüner Veltliner, 15% Zweigelt, 10% Riesling, 8% Welschriesling, 4% St. Laurent, 1% Pinot Blanc. In addition, 9% of the Gelber Muskateller variety is planted in a field blend with fungus-resistant grape varieties in one vineyard. All grapes are harvested by hand from the end of September to the beginning of November. These grapes are used to produce fine organic wines, which are fermented as spontaneously as possible with the grapes' own yeasts. Fermentation and aging of the wines take place in stainless steel tanks as well as in large wooden barrels and small oak casks.

Since 2019, the winery has been converting to biodynamic viticulture according to Demeter principles with the aim of further improving wine quality and offering biodynamic wines in the foreseeable future.
