Domaine Ortola

Domaine Ortola is owned by Georges Ortola, his wife Suzanne, and their adult children, Helene and Nelson. They cultivate the 100 hectares of vineyards located on and near the Mediterranean Sea according to the biodynamic principles of the Demeter Association. These vineyards were previously partly owned by other wineries, after whose names they were named, such as "Notre Dame de Quatorze," "Château Tapie," or "Château de Lunes." Georges Ortola gradually acquired these uncultivated vineyards located on the Etang de Bages lake starting in 1983, creating an organic winery of more than 100 hectares.

The Ortola's are passionate winemakers, they all believe in what they do and they enjoy doing it. Their wines have been certified organic since 2008 and since 2015, this expression is not an exaggeration, they have been cultivating the soil and vines in a biodynamic manner according to the rules of the Demederbund, to which they belong. The emphasis is on the natural balance of microorganisms, bacteria, fungi and small creatures such as worms, beetles, insects and birds, which form healthy biodiversity. This means that diseases and pest infestations of the vine crop can be avoided. Another principle of the biodynamic way of working is that special plant-strengthening and protective preparations are produced in-house. All work must be carried out at a certain position of the stars according to Maria Thun's lunar calendar. This rule applies until the wine is bottled. Even the time at which a biodynamically produced wine is consumed can be influenced positively or negatively. will be.
