The Utiel Requena wine-growing region is named after the towns of Utiel and Requena, which are about 70 km west of Valencia's hinterland. It covers approximately 40,000 hectares of vineyards bordering the La Mancha wine region in central Spain.
Since Utiel Requena is shielded from the Mediterranean Sea by a mountain range, the climate is predominantly continental with occasional Mediterranean influences. Temperatures are very hot in summer and very cold in winter with frequent frosts.
They vary with increasing altitude of the vineyards, which are up to 1,000 m above sea level, especially at night, which is why very fruity organic wine can be produced here.
The soil in the vineyards is calcareous, which quickly absorbs the little rainfall and the soil surface dries very quickly. Vines must therefore have deep roots in order to absorb moisture, which contains dissolved minerals that give the wines a mineral note.
The Utiel Requena vineyards are still cultivated by almost 7,000 winegrowers who deliver their grapes to around 100 cooperatives and large wineries. But more and more of these winegrowers are recognizing the great quality potential of their grapes and are starting to press them themselves to produce great, fruity wines, including organic wines.
The red grape variety Bobal, which produces colorful fruity wines with beautiful mineral notes, is used for this purpose. Other red grape varieties include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The production of white wines is still negligible.
