Poggio Trevvalle

Poggio Trevvalle

The Valle brothers Umberto and Bernardo bought Poggio Trevvalle in southern Tuscany (Maremma) in 1998.

They brought years of viticulture experience with them from Apulia, in order to realize their goal of producing Tuscan organic wines of the highest quality, typical for grape varieties.

Poggio Trevvalle is the name of a hill (80 m. Above sea level) of 500 m

southeast of the village "Arcille" which is near the medieval town of Campagnatico and Grosseto, the capital of the province of Maremma.

Poggio Trevvalle is located at the foothills of Monte Amiata (1783 m. Above sea level) and only a few hundred meters from the confluence of the Ombrone river and the Trasubbie stream.

The vineyards of the Poggio Trevvalle organic winery

From a geological point of view, the soil in the Poggio Trevvalle vineyards has its origins in the sedimentation of the Upper Miocene and Pliocene (Zancleum - Piacenzium). It consists of Pliocene marine deposits (conglomerates) and helps to give Poggio Trevvalle's organic wines a distinctive, slightly salty note.

10 hectares of the total of 13.5 hectares of vineyards are located on a slope facing south. It consists of silt-loamy soil. The grapes growing on it make round, generous wines. The remaining 3.5 hectares of vineyards are planted on a slope in a northerly direction. The soil there is loamy and gives the organic wines more strength and elegance.

The planting of the organic vineyards

Over 90% of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, the rest with the varieties Alicante, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The number of vine hectares ranges from 3000 in the oldest vineyard and up to 6000 in the cordon-style vines that have been planted since 2000. In this method, the vines have a short trunk with a single, solid branch (string) that grows along a wire to one side of the vine. Two and a half hectares of vines are raised using the Guyot system. The vineyards are listed in the D.O.C.G in the register of Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco, which recognizes the exceptional wine-growing potential of Poggio Trevvalle. Most of the harvested grapes are used for the production of Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G. Wines used. the remaining grapes are used for the production of Montecucco Rosso D.O.C. Wine, as well as for I.G.T. Toscana Rosso (Tuscan red wine) and I.G.T. Toscana Rosato Wines (Tuscan Rosè Wine).

Organic and biodynamic viticulture

The entire production of Poggio Trevvalle has been BIO certified since 1999. Choosing to practice certified organic farming means commitment to protecting biodiversity and managing the soil without polluting the land or water. Poggio Trevvalle has also been using biodynamic agricultural methods for many years, but is not certified biodynamic. The aim is to naturally improve and maintain the fertility and vitality of the soil. Compost from stable manure, green manure, regular crop rotation, mechanical pest control and pesticides made from mineral and vegetable substances are the tools used for this.
