Lisboa Regional organic wine

Almost all of Portugal's important wine regions are located off the main roads and railway lines that run from south to north along the coast or east towards Spain. The wine-growing region Vinho Lisboa Regional, formerly called Extremadura, is an exception.

It begins a few kilometers north of the Portuguese capital LIsbon and extends along the Atlantic coast almost to Coimbra in the north and extends about 50 km inland. Vinho Regional (IGP) is the Portuguese name for Vin de Pays (formerly country wine) according to European wine law, which has been in force since 2009. It allows wine buyers to identify the origin of an IGP wine on the bottle label. In our case, an IGP wine - country wine from the geographically defined region north of LIsbon. This is associated with production regulations such as the use of certain grape varieties. There are more than 30 of them within the Vinho Regional Lisboa.

The Vinho Regional Lisboa designation of origin is one of 14 Portuguese designated Vinho Regional zones. It is one of the most active wine-producing regions in Portugal with some well-known and good wines such as Bucelas, Arruda, Alenque and others, mostly drunk along the more populated coastal areas and especially in LIsbon.

The Vinho Regional Lisboa area is divided into nine subzones according to climatic, topographical and geological characteristics. To put it simply: near the Atlantic coast with cooler temperatures and constant more or less strong winds that cause the vines to grow slanting towards the east, particularly attractive, light and fresh wines thrive, which go with all kinds of fish dishes, barnacles, crabs and go well with everything edible from the sea. Further inland, the climate is milder, resulting in softer, rounder and stronger organic white and organic red wines.

The grape varieties grown here are largely unknown in other Countries, but that can be seen as an advantage, at least for those wine drinkers who still retain some curiosity and like to discover new things.
