Franconia organic wine

The Francronian wine-growing region differs from other German wine-growing regions with significantly lower harvest quantities - in 2020 it was an average of 43.5 hectoliters/hectare. This is less than half of other German wine-growing regions and suggests really good Franconian wines, which are also mostly dry. If the residual sugar content is slightly higher, the term “Franconian dry” is used.

The second difference lies in the higher density of organic wineries, which already produce organic wine on around 20% of the total Franconian wine-growing area.

The total wine-growing area in Franconia amounted to 6,163 hectares in 2020, making it one of the medium-sized wine-growing regions in Germany. It is located exclusively in Bavaria and begins at Bamberg in the east and extends to Aschaffenberg in the west along the Main in climatically protected locations over a length of approx. 300 km, as well as away from the Main in the Steigerwald between the cities of Würzburg, Schweinfurt and Bamberg .

The special soil conditions have a particular influence on the quality, aromas and characteristics of the wines from Franconia. They consist of Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper.

The so-called Main loop near Volkach, where the wine-growing areas of the Zang organic winery are located, is also called the heart of Weinfranken. Here the soil consists predominantly of shell limestone, as is also present in Champagne and Burgundy.
