Languedoc Roussillon was the birthplace of the French organic wine movement

The Languedoc Roussillon wine region is the largest in the world with a vineyard area of 2,800 km2. It produces 1/3 of all wines in France. Of these, 33% are already organic wines, which make up 7% worldwide.

One of the pioneers of the organic wine movement was Fréderic Jougla in Cazouls les Beziers, who produced remarkably good Vin de Pays de l'Herault as early as 1966, which he called "Joubio". However, the production of organic wine only really took off around 1980.

At the same time, a striving for quality began, high-quality, new grape varieties were planted, the harvest was halved, investments were made in the training of a new generation of winegrowers and in environmental protection. Respect for nature, the health of the workers in the vineyards and that of the wine drinkers became part of the concept of "quality".

Languedoc-Roussillon

The Languedoc Roussillon wine-growing region stretches along the Mediterranean Sea from Arles and Nimes in the east via Montpellier, Narbonne, Perpignan to the border of Spain and extends from the coast up to 50 km inland.

The climate is distinctly Mediterranean with little continental influences in the northern regions and the soils varied. It has the best conditions for the production of good organic wines, which are available from numerous appellations AOC/AOP (controlled designations of origin), for which certain grape varieties, harvest quantities, winemaking methods and degrees of alcohol are prescribed, and whose quality is subject to official controls. In addition, there are numerous IGP designations (formerly Vin de Pays/country wines) that are subject to lower requirements.
