Organic wine Rheinhessen
The RHEINHESSEN wine-growing region is the largest wine-growing region in Germany with 26,000 hectares of vineyards. The wine-growing areas are located on wide plains, in hilly terrain and on steeper slopes east along the Rhine, or south of Mainz in the so-called Rhine bend.
It is managed by around 6,000 winegrowers. This means that the average size of a winery is only around 4.3 hectares. This structure raises the question, how can these small wineries survive economically? Compared to the average size of a winery in our neighbors to the west and south, the wineries are at least twice as big.
Is the answer to this the large harvest volume of 2.5 million hectoliters, i.e. an average of 96 hectoliters per hectare? This is close to the legally permitted maximum limit for quality wines. Based on the average size of 4.3 hectares of a wine-growing business in Rheinhessen, it would be 413 hectoliters of wine per year, i.e. 41,300 liters of wine.
If the opinion of experts is correct, then lower harvest quantities are the prerequisite for better wines. Conversely, can one assume that wines from Rheinhessen can at best be described as average in terms of quality? This can be true for many incomprehensibly cheap wines.
On the other hand, there are numerous Rhine-Hessian wineries with harvest quantities of around 50 hl/hectare or even less that produce real top-quality Rhine-Hessian wines, but which then cost a little more than €3/bottle.
So it's entirely up to you to decide whether you buy and drink good, very good or just a few good wines from Rheinhessen. In any case, we decided on good and very good organic wines from the Sander winery in Mettenheim. It is a winery that has been growing organic wine for more than 50 years. It produces white wines mainly from Riesling, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Chrdonnay, Grauburunder and Pinot Blanc, but also Ro wines from Pinot Noir, Merlot, Dornfelder and others.
