Oeko-Weingut Zang, "Gegenstrom" Mueller-Thurgau, organic wine, white, 2019

The wines usually don't turn out to be typical representatives of their grape variety and manage to skillfully hold up a mirror to entrenched prejudices and dusty varietal clichés:

The countercurrent wines, such as the Oeko-Weingut Zang Müller-Thurgau, are of an invigoratingly different style - a new dimension of wine enjoyment and a contribution to the natural wine movement.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: Barely sulphurized, the wine runs straw yellow into the glass.
  • Nose: The bouquet is already very spicy with hints of fresh grapes and white almonds, underlined by floral and yellow fruit aromas that are reminiscent of a Franconian orchard.
  • Mouth: On the palate there is a tart, restrained fruit, nutty and slightly yeasty aromas. The aromatic, muscaty spice reveals it to be Müller-Thurgau. The wine has a touch of crumbly tannins on the edges of the tongue (the irritating element) and a noticeably expressive substance in a delicate, creamy melt with at the same time quite clear minerality and a trace of smoke. Salty in the finish, its deep, earthy spice lingers for a long time.
A groundbreaking Müller-Thurgau that is able to sweep away the dusty prejudices of this underrated grape variety!
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 10° C

Organic wine production, Oeko-Wein-Gut Zang, "Gegenstrom" Mueller-Thurgau, white

All grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the grapes' own yeasts and matued in wooden barrels. With the exception of some SO2, no preservatives or fining agents are used.

During fermentation in wooden barrels and in the following months during storage on the full yeast, around 10% of whole berries are contained in the wine. The wine remains on the lees without sulfur until July. During this time, the alcohol leaches out a variety of flavors, extracts and tannins from the berry peels and seeds.
