Organic wine Spain, biodynamic wine Spain, natural wines Spain, organic wine pure Spain

Spanish organic and biodynamic wines are characterized by a very good price / quality ratio.

But that's not our only criterion for choosing our Spanish organic wines. We prefer to select wines for which the grapes come from very isolated vineyards that are not contaminated by the offdrift of toxic pesticides of toxic pesticides from other,

conventionally cultivated vineyards. This is the only way to produce almost residue-free organic wines.

By the way, anyone who only knows Spain along the Mediterranean coast cannot imagine how beautiful and ecologically intact the interior of Spain is.

It is less nice to see that social aspects no longer play a role for some wine producers who are under price pressure from the large cooperatives. Where manual labor is required, precarious employment relationships can arise that are incompatible with the idea of biological and human action. When wholesalers are offered ready-to-fill "bulk organic wine" for €0.25 to €0.50, you can imagine what a low price winegrowers get for 1 kg of grapes. This is one reason for the ever-growing cooperatives on the one hand, and for the decreasing number of small cooperatives and independent wineries on the other. This goes hand in hand with the rural exodus of the young generation, who find no prospects in their homeland.
Biowein [pur] takes these facts into account when selecting its organic wines from Spain by no longer buying and selling organic wines from cooperatives or so-called private wine brands.

The most important grape varieties in Spain

  • Airén: white grape grown mainly in La Mancha. Tolerates high temperatures and drought. The bunches are conical with 2 wing-like outgrowths and weigh up to 1 kg. The berries are large with white to white-pink colour. The resulting wines are yellowish in colour, with fruity aromas and a beautiful structure.
  • Alarije: white variety that is at home in Estremadura, Badajoz and Cázeres, where it is preferably cultivated in valleys with gravelly subsoil. The wines are straw yellow in colour, have typical apple and pear aromas and a fresh and intense taste.
  • Albariño: White grape variety that covers about 90% of the vineyard area in Galicia. Translated, her name means: the white of the Rhine. She likes to be kept in the pergola training system and she is susceptible to downy mildew (Peronospora). The round, small berries are yellow-green in colour. Albariño wines are yellow in color, with floral and fruity scents and intense flavors on the palate with fine acidity.
  • Bobal: is an important red grape variety in the Alicante region in the DO Utiel Requena, cultivated in the Valencian hinterland at an altitude of 750 m. The medium-sized grape with black-blue berries with a firm skin delivers intense ruby red wines with a fresh taste on the palate.
  • Garnacha: an excellent red grape believed to have been cultivated in Aragon as early as the 12th century and now found all over the world where temperatures are high.
  • Graciano: sprout very late in spring, avoiding the frosts in your main growing areas in Rioja and in Navarra. Its berries are small, round, black-blue, with a thick skin and colorless flesh. Wines made from the Graciano grape have an intense ruby red colour, and the scent of various berries, plums and red flowers. On the palate, Graciano wines are warm and slightly astringent.
  • Macabeu: (synonym Viura) white variety, widespread in northern Spain, ripens late, produces fruity-flowery wines and is not susceptible to oxidation.
  • Mazuelo: (synonym Cariñena), robust, rich in tannins and tannins, black-red when young, later brick-colored.
  • Mencia: a red grape variety that is mainly grown in the Spanish wine region of Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras. Mencia grapes thrive on slate rock and, with good vinification, produce very fruity, light red wines with a light graphite scent.
  • Monastrell: (synonym Mourvedre in France), important red grape variety in the Denominacion Alicante.
  • Parellada: a very noble white grape variety from which fine organic wine and cava are produced in Penedes.
  • Tinta de Toro: a high-quality grape variety in the DO Toro area. There is disagreement as to whether it is related to Tempranillo or an independent variety.
  • Verdejo: particularly in the Rueda wine-growing region, it has been cultivated very successfully for several decades. With modern winemaking in the absence of oxygen, it produces very fruity and spicy wines like those from the Dominio de Verderrubi Pita winery.
  • Xarel.lo: white grape variety grown in Penedes, Alella and Mallorca. It produces robust wines that oxidize little.
