Oeko-Weingut Zang, "Orts-Wein", Bronner, Franconia QbA, organic wine, white, 2022

Rainer Zang, the winemaker, tries to interpret his local wines as clear anar ad transparent representatives of grape varieties without much chichi. He focuses on the mineral origins of the vineyards around the wine-growing towns of Sommerach and Nordheim. The existing shell limestone soil from the Main loop runs through the wines like a cool stream bed. Like the Oeko-Weingut Zang Orts-Wein Bronner, they are all consistent representatives of its organic philosophy and style: close to nature, unvarnished, honest and dry.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: Pale yellow with grenish reflexions
  • Nose: On the nose it appears mineral, mild, light, smelling of dried meadow herbs, paired with juicy apples. Together with the carbon dioxide that is still present in the young wine, it is stimulatingly fresh.
  • Mouth: Only on the tongue does it show what it's made of: it presses powerfully onto the palate with a melty grip and shows a wide range of vegetal and delicate yellow fruit flavors supported by a piquant saltiness. Everything still seems very fresh. In the spicy finish, its firm, mouth-filling Burgundian consistency remains at a moderate length.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 10°C.

Organic wine production, Oeko-Wein-Gut Zang "Orts-Wein", Bronner, Franken, QbA, white

All grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the grapes' own yeasts. With the exception of some SO2, no preservatives or fining agents are used.

The straightforward local wine from the Nordheimer vineyards stands for lively freshness and densely embodies the long-standing ecological cultivation of the vines.

Bronner is a young, fungus-resistant grape variety (PIWI for short) whose name is little known. There are only three hectares under cultivation in all of Germany.
In general, Bronner can be compared to the Burgundy varieties due to its subtle and reserved aroma. Wines from this grape variety require a bottle of wine to develop their complexity.

He focuses on the mineral origins of the vineyards around the wine-growing towns of Sommerach and Nordheim. Organic wine profile

  • Color: Pale yellow
  • Nose: it is already densely packed on the nose: dark and black berries, dried plums, tobacco, licorice and a fine hint of leather and juniper mix with earthy, spicy aromas to form a concentrated and complex overall picture.
  • Mouth: Yes, the Regent variety can also offer great cinema. It is a sophisticated wine with a warm Mediterranean character. The tannins are silky and finely integrated due to the long maturing time on the fine yeast in our cellar. The full-bodied, spicy finish is evidence of the high extract density and lingers on the tongue for a long time:
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 16-18°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, "Orts-Wein", Pinot Noir, Old World, Franconia QbA, organic wine, red, 2012

Like the Oeko-Weingut Zang Orts-Wein Pinot Noir, Old World, they are all consistent representatives of its organic philosophy and style: close to nature, unvarnished, honest and dry.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: A delicate cherry red glows from the glass.
  • Nose: The scent is initially menthol-cool with an ethereal feel of eucalyptus and licorice. Then the finely ripened fruit gradually emerges with sour cherries and dried fruits. All of this is supported by clearly green, vegetal-tart undertones that bring to mind forest floors, spices and herbs such as cloves, allspice and sage. Everything remains very transparent and rather quiet.
  • Mouth: In the mouth, the initially rustic tannins are reminiscent of a French Village Pinot, but it cannot hide its Franconian origins and the chalky grip of the shell limestone soil paired with the fine roasted aroma of the wooden barrel lingers on the palate. With a little air, the tannins become significantly softer. A dense red fruity spiciness also opens up on the tongue, which is retained for a long time in the earthy, ethereal finish, carried by the mature tannins.
The floating elegance of Pinot Noir: mercilessly good at this ripeness! 2024
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 14- 16°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, "Orts-Wein", Pinot Noir, Newd World, Franconia QbA, organic wine, red, 2018

Like the Oeko-Weingut Zang Orts-Wein Pinot Noir, New World, they are all consistent representatives of its organic philosophy and style: close to nature, unvarnished, honest and dry.

The name is no coincidence and is stylistically in stark contrast to our finer 'Old World'. This Pinot Noir surprised us in its style with a very international feel, which is more familiar from warmer growing regions in the New World: Significantly louder, fruitier and more lush in expression, but still very Pinot Noir.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: It stands in the glass with fiery cherry red
  • Nose: a fragrant bouquet of juicy red fruits such as cherries, blueberries and blackberries. There are also traces of dried fruit, bacon, leather, licorice and bay leaf as well as a hint of almond, cloves and vanilla.
  • Mouth: While its brother from the 2012 vintage is much cooler and more reserved here, this 2018 wine is more of a lush, warm juiciness. It glides silkily smoothly over the tongue with well-integrated tannins at the edges and lingers full-bodied on the palate. The dense finish with red fruity fullness spreads its extract-rich presence throughout the entire mouth. This Pinot Noir flexes your muscles.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 14- 16°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, "Orts-Wein", reb wine cuvée number 5,  Franconia QbA, organic wine, red

Like the Oeko-Weingut Zang Orts-Wein red wine cuvée number 5, they are all consistent representatives of its organic philosophy and style: close to nature, unvarnished, honest and dry.

The red wine cuvée always contains the Pinot Noir and Regent grape varieties. As the fifth cuvée in this compilation, it bears the corresponding name - Number Five.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: dark cherry red
  • Nose: The broad bouquet reveals a variety of hints of violets, essential herbs, dark berries, laurel, juniper and spices.
  • Mouth: Here the delicate and elegant Pinot Noir nestles against the fruity, spicy and powerful Regent to create an independent and expressive wine. On the palate, the powerful body is supported by finely roasted wood nuances with tobacco and coffee and a structured, mature tannin structure that keeps it present for a long time and still has plenty of potential for the next few years. For us, its style is not a “typically German” red wine, but rather comparable to fully ripe wines from the warm south of France. Elegant, dense and powerful.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 14- 16°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, Silvaner, "Langgraben", organic wine, white, 2021

Every year the winemaker tries to capture the image of the vintage in all its facets and make it tangible in the wine. The vineyard itself should be allowed to tell its own individual story: a story about the very own character of the vineyard, about healthy soil, about varied weather, the microclimate of the location and especially about the years of experience of the vines on their location. They are organic wines like this Oeko-Weingut Zang “Lagenwein” Silvaner Langgraben, with tradition for a sustainable future.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: light yellow with a fine yeast veil
  • Nose: Its scent is also initially dominated by the yeast. Only after a little while do you feel a hint of smoke, because it matured in oak barrels, with a slight spiciness of green pepper.
Air is good for it, because over time the variety emerges more and more and the wine becomes complex with notes of almonds and nuts, aromas of yellow fruits and floral accents
  • Mouth: Mouth: really dry on the palate, it pulls gently over the tongue, appears piquantly salty at the edges and spreads its persistent presence throughout the entire mouth. Dense like flannel in effect, velvety in consistency with lots of melt.
A groundbreaking Silvaner - unique in its own way!
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 8-10°C.

All grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the grapes' own yeasts and matued in wooden barrels. With the exception of some SO2, no preservatives or fining agents are used.

Since the single-vineyard wines have been bottled unfiltered since the 2021 vintage, this year we have only classified the wines as country wines in order not to come into conflict with the wine law, which requires filtering for single-vineyard wines. This "Lagen-Silvaner without location" grows on the long ditch, the border path between Nordheim and Sommerach. A fillet piece in the furthest original corner of the Nordheimer Vogelein, which here borders on the Sommeracher Katzenkopf; This corner contains some of the best areas on the wine island.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, Traminer, "Katzenkopf", organic wine, white, 2020

The small, thick-skinned grapes full of aromas come from the famous Sommeracher Katzenkopf vineyard site from gnarled remaining vines that are almost 40 years old. This resulted in this organic wine Oeko-Weingut Zang , Traminer. An organic wine Wine as a storyteller that knows how to delight its listeners brilliantly with ever new twists: Our personal respect for this great European cultural grape and this wine, which is now considered exotic.

Traminer is now considered a rarity in many parts of Germany. It used to be found in almost every mixed batch as an aroma and structure provider and is a genetic ancestor in many other grape varieties in Europe; He is, so to speak, one of the great-grandfathers of European wine-growing culture. We also want to maintain this centuries-old tradition of the variety and with this bone-dry single-vineyard wine we show a special image of this historic cult grape.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: straw color
  • Nose: initially somewhat reductive with flinty notes of flaring matchsticks. After some time in the air, the wine opens up and aromas of tart balsamic herbs, rose petals and spicy notes are added, as well as the finest abrasion of citrus fruits.
  • Mouth: The first impression is literally Franconian dry. It fills the mouth ethereally before hitting the tongue and palate with a grippy substance. There is a balance here between agile acidity, salty minerality of the soil, stimulating tannins, which can be attributed to the longer mashing time, and fine fruity, extract-rich, piquant aromas. The long yeast storage and the batonnage (mixing with the yeast) in the barrels ensure a creamy overall impression and leave a deep, earthy-spicy aftertaste that can be felt for a long time.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 8-10°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, Pinot Blanc, "Hohe Setz", organic wine, white, 2021

The Oeko-Weingut Zang Pinot Blanc "Hohe Setz" is the winery's "great Pinot Blanc". It comes from one of the winery's best vineyard locations. The plot sits enthroned as a fillet in the middle of the 'Nordheimer Vogelein' location in the upper part of the slope facing south-west over the Main

Organic wine profile

  • Color: Golden colored
  • Nose: The golden and unfiltered single-vineyard wine exudes an initially cool, bitter scent with restrained yellow-fruity aromas and vegetal tones. This delicate bouquet contains nuances of delicate meadow flowers, juicy yellow apples and mirabelle plums paired with the spicy notes of hazelnuts and white pepper..
  • Mouth: On the palate it impressively shows what it is made of: a wine that you feel more than taste thanks to its organic cultivation. With fine acidity and tart, almost earthy tones, it passes over the tongue and is full-bodied with a lot of grip and melting on the palate. The wooden barrel in which it matured plays a role with quiet, smoky-spicy nuances. The fresh-looking, slightly salty mineral note reflects the shell limestone soil of its location for a long time.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 8-10°C.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, Chardonnay, "Kapellenstueck", organic wine, white, 2021

Chardonnay, the great white grape variety of Burgundy, feels very comfortable on the limestone soils in the Kapellenstück vineyard near Nordheim am Main, and the warmer climate also contributes to this. This is how the excellent white organic wine Oeko-Weingut Zang Chardonnay “Kapellenberg” was created.

Organic wine profile

  • Color: Golden colored
  • Nose: The scent is characterized by its origins in the gravelly rock in the limestone soil. First on the nose you notice a hint of flint, followed by a delicate yeast note, nuances of fresh citrus fruits, juicy apple, meadow flowers and meadow herbs, with hints of nuts, sesame and mushrooms, warm bread crust. Overall a very complex bouquet.
  • Mouth: This Chardonnay expresses its terroir in a lasting effect, almost more tactilely than tastefully. Its calm, completely dry fruit is underlined by nutty and delicately smoky notes acquired during its maturation in barrels. A very fine acidity permeates its well-structured body with good persistence, while it is supple with a long-lasting taste.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 8-10°C.

All grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the grapes' own yeasts and matued in wooden barrels. With the exception of some SO2, no preservatives or fining agents are used.

The unfiltered single-vineyard wine comes from one of our younger plots. This is located on the north-east slope behind Nordheim in the direction of the vineyard chapel and is therefore referred to by us as the 'chapel piece'. They are still quite young vines (planted in 2010), whose Francophile character is only slowly emerging over the years.

Oeko-Weingut Zang, Chardonnay, "Kapellenstueck", organic wine, white, 2021

There were only two barrels that performed significantly better in the preliminary tasting, simply sensational! Father and son Zang, who looked after the vines in the vineyard together, decided to let this wine mature for 10 years in barrels on the fine yeast. The Oeko-Weingut Zang Pinot Noir Private Reserve was only bottled in 2023. It has developed great and offers great Burgundy cinema!

Organic wine profile

  • Color: dense and bright crimson red with purple reflections.
  • Mouth: Restrained, delicate and ethereal in its effect, this wine conveys a complex and profound wealth of facets into the glass. There are ripe and juicy berries, pickled cherries, cool hints of herbs and eucalyptus reminiscent of menthol, licorice, tar and some tobacco, underlined by finely spicy, woody impressions of dewy, damp autumn forest ground. The entire aroma appears dense and transparent at the same time, demanding, decisive and light-footed, floating in one - the diva-like temperament of a great Pinot Noir.
  • Drinking recommendation : Serve at 17° C

Organic wine production, Oeko-Wein-Gut Zang, Pinot Noir Private Reserve, red

All grapes are harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented with the grapes' own yeasts and matued in wooden barrels. With the exception of some SO2, no preservatives or fining agents are used.

Due to the elegant, long and careful aging in the barrel, the wine now appears pleasantly round and harmonious in terms of taste and tannin structure. The wine appears weightlessly balanced due to its fine acidity, and with its silky tannin structure it is ideally positioned for further aging potential in the coming years.
